Barriers to forced transitions in polysaccharides
Article Abstract:
Recent atomic force microscopy (AFM) experiments have measured the elastic properties of polysaccharides and the forced extensions by AFM have lead to the conclusion that the basic elastic unit extends by a chair-to-boat conformational transition. Ab initio HF/6-31G calculations are used here to investigate a series of boat conformations and a twist-boat conformation and the results match the AFM experiments.

Free energy surfaces for the alpha(1 -> 4)-glycosidic linkage: Implications for polysaccharide solution structure and dynamics
Article Abstract:
A potential of mean force surface for rotation about phi and psi dihedral angles of the alpha(1 -> 4)-glycosidic linkage in the maltose disaccharide (4-O-alpha-D-glucopyranose) in aqueous solution is presented. The free energy analysis provides a thermodynamic and conformational rationale for the effects of water on alpha(1 -> 4)-linked polysaccharides and carbohydrate glasses.

Microcalorimetric evidence of hydrophobic interactions between hydrophobically modified cationic polysaccharides and surfactants of the same charge
Article Abstract:
The synthesis and characterization of a series of new polymers-hydrophobically modified cationic polysaccharides based on a dextran are presented. The study proves the existence of various hydrophobic interactions between such polysaccharides and the surfactants with the same charge.
